Dad's Wallet

Solve the following problem.  Give your answer in the comment section with an explanation of the strategy you used, why you used it and how you are ABSOLUTELY sure your answer is correct!

On Wednesday, Dad got paid,  Thursday morning my brother took 1/2 the money to go open a checking account (because he was always short of money). On Friday, I needed some for a movie, so I took half of what remained.  Sis came along next, and took half of the remaining money.  Dad then went to gas up the car and used half of the rest of his money, and he wondered where it all went so fast.  He only had $5 left.  How much money did he start with in his wallet?

  1. The dad started with 80 dollars I got this answer because the problem says the money was took each time in half so the original ammount was divided by two 4 times leaving the dad 5 dollars so you multiply 5 by 2 four times so it becomes 5x2x2x2x2=80

  2. The Father started with 80 dollars. how i got this was simple. the dad ended with 5 dollars, and he just used half, so he went to the gas station with ten. the gil took half so when she came he had twenty. then the boy came along and took half so when he came he had 40. and when the first boy came, he took half, so his dad started with 80! so, 5+5=10 10+10=20 20+20=40 40+40=80

  3. The father started with 80 dollars because I first made an estimate of 40 dollars and when I divided it 4 times, I got $2.50. Since that is half of where I needed to be, I multiplied 40x2 and that is 80. then, I divided it 4 times and got 5 dollars. That was my answer.

  4. dad had 80 dollars, because he had 5 dollars left, after he took away half. He had 10 when he went to the gas station. The girl took half of 20, which was ten dollars. Then the "I" came along and took 20 dollars and then I, Brandon multiplied that by 2, which was 40, then I multiplied that by 2 again. My formula= 5x2x2x2x2, which=80 bucks.

  5. Did anyone try to work backwards?!

  6. Yes, I tried to work backwards, but just to be sure, I then did it the other way.

  7. There dad made 80 dollars on Wednesday. I figured this problem out by starting at the end and just doubling the number until the end. For example I started with 5 dollars and just doubled it to 10 and then to 20, then to 40, and finally to 80 dollars. So I read it over from the beginning starting with 80 bucks and subtracting half of everything until zero.

  8. The answer is 80 dollars in his wallet. I solved this problem by working backwards. I doubled 5 and got 10. Because half of ten is 5. Then i did this pattern 3 more times for each person who took some. And i got 20, 40, then 80 and that is my answer.

  10. Dad had $80 in his wallet. To solve this problem, I worked backwards. Everyone always took half of what was left. Since dad ended up with five dollars, I multiplied five by two to get ten. Then, ten multiplied by two to get 20 and so on until I reached the answer.
